I was at the newport boat show and saw the new folding wheel on the new hunters and wondering if they like them or not.

Got one last spring - love it

Joan loves it - works like charm and opens up the area getting by the pedestal. Jim S/V Java

Great!

Nick, I just got one for my Hunter 40.5, and we really like it. The wheel really opens up the cockpit when you entertain and have guests aboard.

A LOT less expensive...

to remove the nut and hang entire wheel on stanchion outside cockpit! Check Edson catalog for nut wrench and mounting bracket.

We don't even have a mounting bracket.

We just tie it to the radar arch. Only takes a second and it can't fall overboard.

But When You Drag

Yes the Edson way and the way I have seen many stow the wheel elsewhere does work, BUT, what about the 2am wind/tide shift and you are dragging into other boats or a rocky shore. With the folding wheel you can steer the boat with it folded. Its impossible to steer if you have no wheel and to get it you have to find the wrench and unscrew it from its stowed position which will not be that handy on the dark and stormy night this will happen. Yes they are expensive and the 42" is way overpriced but they are nice and effective. I have a 40" and will get a 42" when Lewmar come to there senses and make it more reasonable. Tony

Thanks everyone

I am looking to move up to new 36 and was just wondering how people like the folding wheel on all thenew hunters,I saw the beneteau 373 with the wheel that tilts to one side and thought the folding wheel was better because it gives more room on both sides and made the cockpit more space not just one side like the beneteau,I don't like removing wheel option because it would be just my luck for it fall over board, thanks again. nick

Tony your premise about the folly of wheel removal

is that it would be removed on a dark and stormy night and that it would be held in place with a wrench-tightened nut and the wrench couldn't be found. HUH? We tie ours in place with a square knot. And the seaman like thing to do during threatening weather is to have the boat READY. That means doing what ever is needed for safety. Forgetting to replace the wheel 'ain't never gonna happen'.

folding wheel is great!

Nick, we put a 36" on opur 356 this year and it made a huge improvement in the cockpit space and in steering the boat-the larger wheel give much better feel. well worth it.

Seaman Fred

Hi Fred I agree entirely with you for the real seamen who are always thinking ten steps ahead. However for a lot of "seamen" they do not thinck beyond the next beer. Yes maybe I am unkind to some , but it never ceases to amaze me on the qestions asked on this forum by folks who have spent several thousands on a boat and then ask, what is a seacock!!! or something simelar.
