I'm looking at replacing my current wheel on my 36 Catalina with a 40" Lewmar folding wheel. Will that work I believe my current wheel is a 42"

42" seems too big for a C36. I had a C36 for a long time but wouldn't you know, I can't recall; but I thin kit was more like 36 or 38". My Tartan 3800 has a 42" wheel, and I know it's bigger than what was on the C36.

Yes that's why I wish to down size.

It looks like he has a Mark II C36. They had larger wheels than the Mark Is.

I went from a solid wheel to a folding wheel and I miss the solid wheel a lot. It feels so much better when the breeze picks up. I was thinking of going back. Most of the time I forget to fold the wheel when we are at anchor on a trip.

I stand corrected the current wheel is a 40”. I would like to move to a folding 36”. How would that effect perform and turning radius?

(I know this wouldn’t apply to an existing pedestal, but as original equipment I have a Goiot Pedestal. The neat feature is that the entire wheel can be rotated 90 deg. when not in use. It takes up less room in the cockpit and allows better access to the swim platform.)

I would not need a folding wheel but would go with an increased diameter rather than smaller because I like to steer from the port or starboard rail for visibility reasons. Also my boat is somewhat tender and being able to get crew weight onto the windward rail helps the boat to sail flatter.

Doug, I moved my seats to the stern rail so I can look forward and steer with my toes.
