I am interested in upgrading to a folding prop. I have a 3 blade 16"X? RH prop with a Universal M25 (1986) the three blade works great, but I believe it is producing a lot of drag. It appears that the standard 3 blade prop is a 15 X 9. I was surprised that I had a 16". I am looking for imput. I have heard that the flexofold is a good prop and a good value. I prefer the folding prop design, I sail the Maine coast which has many lobster pots. Any input on props and size?

Hi, William,

You might want to consider asking at our C34 Website Message Board, here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php?board=11.0

You can ask the question, or search, using words like prop, folding prop, Kiwi, etc. We've had many discussions, including brands and blade and pitch ideas.

Hi William,
We have a newly acquired C-34 with a two blade flex-o-fold prop, and are absolutely amazed with it's performance... (our only comparative point of reference was our C-30 with a fixed 2-blade prop). The Flex-o-fold has a similar feel and response (albeit on a larger boat), both in terms of reverse prop-walk, and speed / handling. We typically motor at 7.5 knots (SOG, GPS recorded), and sail at the same speed in moderate winds, and to date have recorded 8.3 knots on a broad reach. (10.5 knots through the Cape Cod Canal with the current).
Highly recommended after our first summer with the C-34.

Cheers,

Barry

Barry,
I read your post and am quite interested in your performance.

Would you please tell me what year is your C-34, engine size, and LWL? You probably went right by me this summer thinking "that poor old man in that slow boat".

Hi All U Get,
Our C-34 is a 1986 Fin Keel, Tall Rig, not sure what the LWL is (standard). A good friend was with me going through the CCC, on our way to Boston. He owns a 1999 C-34. My friend was the previous owner of the C-30 that we bought about 2-1/2 years ago in Boston. We have kept in touch in subsequent years, and he came down to Long Island to help me bring the '86 as far as Boston (his home port) when I brought the boat back to Nova Scotia. (He hit just over 10 Knots through the canal with his boat).
Cheers,

Barry

I took mine off and glad I did. They are worth the trouble. Get a good 3 blade fixed.

I am considering the same thing for my Catalina 270. I am trying to find the shaft size and having difficulties. It has a Yanmar 18 hp if that helps.

Anyone?
