Last evening was perfect so @cb32863 and I headed out for a fun sail. Most of the day was spent banging around like this.

But later while reaching at 6 knots, my BRAND NEW American Flag fell out of the transom base. No way I'm losing that, so we initiate our FOB procedure. A trusty Jibe-Stop maneuver has the flag safely on board in 30 seconds!

The FOB procedure was nice, however, inquiring minds want to know how you got the knot meter and compass image on the video. :)

Nicely done. Did not even have time for its FFD (Flag Floatation Device) to inflate. ;-)

It's a GoPro 5 Black, mounted on a Horizon True DAL-1000 self-leveling mount. Keeps the camera level at all angles of heel. The GoPro 5 Black has a built-in GPS (as does the newer 6) that it uses to store the location and speed of every frame as meta-data in the MOV file. GoPro Quik desktop software adds the speed, compass, and track overlay to the video. The SW is free and is very easy to use. The new GoPros feature voice control. Do something awesome, and say 'That was sick'. The GoPro is listening and marks that sequence as a highlight for later automatic editing. Good times!

Well, you learn something new everyday. I have one of those suckers sitting on my desk and I didn't know about the GPS feature. Thanks for the heads up!

Yea handy. With a 6:1 endboom setup, there is a LOT of sheet out there. The 3:1 helps bring it in pronto!

The GPS is nice, but the feature that revolutionized how I use my GoPros is the HIGHLIGHT command. Tell (by saying) the camera to highlight, and it marks it for editing. Back at the computer, click on the highlights you want, and the app makes a movie. This took longer to upload to YouTube than it did to make.

Gets better. Our local lake paparazzi was out taking pictures while we were sailing. Got a bunch of good ones of BlueJ. Like this.

Nice recovery. Note that you have to stop the boat for a real MOB victim if you don't want to rip his arms off or have the rescuers pulled overboard trying to hold onto him. We practiced with dinghy sailors who completely misjudged the inertia of a keelboat. They had to make three passes before they were going slowly enough for the crew to actually recover the victim.

Indeed! The reason it was new (first sail) was last week we had family on the boat and my brother in law was driving. Jodi was messing with the flag for some unknown reason and it fell off. By the time we got back we could not spot it in the choppy water. No way I’m losing the new one on the first voyage.

For sure. You always adjust the recovery to the conditions and the casualty.
