Have any of you flown an asymmetrical? I am looking for pointers on the set, best sailing angles and dousing. The asymmetricl that I have is about a 37-39 feet in height. Which appears to be a little short for my boat. One of my dock mates said it would be good to learn with. I have never flown an asymmetrical on my boat before, once on another boat. I also read a very good article in Sailing. Appreciate any advice any of you might have. Thanks.

Great fun

Get a chute to make flying much easier. The set is to raise the spin halyard first. Then attach the tack and the clew. Run the sheet thru snatch block near catbird seat. Be sure all lines go outside the boat. Best tack is offwind, not dead downwind. Apparent wind will shape up as beam reach, fine. Send me your email and I'll send you free pix and directions to set up a bowsprit as well as the spin lines in a semi-permanent position for easy deploying.

We attach the tack to..

a block on top of the anchor roller with a line led to cockpit. This way we can also adjust the luff tension for different conditions. A sock also makes things much easier if shorthanded. As our boats tend to heel a lot, keep an eye on the wind and get the chute down before things get scary. Have fun!

Chute

I do have a Chute. I think I need to put a cleat on the mast to tie it off. Has anyone installed a cleat on the mast. If so how big and what did you use to secure it? Drill and tap or self tapping skrews?

Drill and tap

Don't use self tapping. Either drill and tap; for a cleat two 1/4 inch 10/24 screws or something smaller will hold. Or use blind rivets, which is fast and easier.

Love my asymmetrical!

I have a trilateral asymmetrical, and I depoly it from a chute. I use a tack line that leads back to the cockpit and have two sheets [green and red, so as not to cnfuse crew]! I fly it about 120 -150 degrees off the wind most of the time, but can go up to 60 degrees off. I start thinking about dousing it when wind gets to 12 knots. The chute and the lines led back make it easier for when I have less experienced crew ... I like the trilateral much better than the bilateral I had ... I have a fractional rig, so need the greater sail volume of the tri ... It's beautiful! A Mother's Day gift from my son a couple of years ago! :) Light blue yellow and white captured star!
