Can a fluxgate compass be installed below the cabin sole? This would place it below the waterline. My bilge is dry and there is a perfect vertical surface here. The fluxgate is for a ST4000 autopilot.

In the center
of the boat would be the best place. That is the point that every motion is centered about. Now the practical location is below the cabin sole on the fore and aft centerline and the port and starboard centerline. And by the way, not close to any magnetic material such as steel. On my 35.5 it is located under the sole in the galley area. It isn't the exact center line but there isn't any steel close by.
