Finally... My Hunter 335 was equipped with Autohelm ST4000+ and I have swung the compass several times trying to get the deviation less than 30°. I read several posts here and some information on Autohelm's web page about the location of the fluxgate unit. On my boat it was located under the forward seat of the dinette down in the corner on the bulkhead in front of the waste holding tank. I got to thinking about the steel keel being an influence on the fluxgate, so I moved the unit up about 12 inches and swung the compass last night and the deviation was only 3°. Now my Autohelm displays the correct heading within 1 or 2 degrees of the course that my GPS displays in all the cardinal directions. Now I'm a happy sailor. It's great when something works with such little effort. Thanks Hunterowners.com and all the people here that share their knowledge for others. Can I ask you.....

What units did you consider and why did you go with the ST-4000 ? I am looking into putting one on our H-33 and I am just a little confused about which unit is most suitable and expandable. Thanks in advance, David Underwood

ST4000 thoughts

I had great luck with the st4000 in my 29.5, and for my 356 specified one, too. great systems approach with the rest of the raymarine components, and everyone I talked to praised their reliability and great support from Raymarine. fluxgate is mounted aft of the pedastal, under the steering cover. On my 356 I'm using it to drive a sailing compass-it's easier to steer by
