Fluxgate Compass Location

I'm in the process of remounting my fluxgate compass for my autopilot.

The boat is a Hunter Vision 36.

It was located in the bilge under the refrigerator right over the keel. I'm thinking of mounting it under the floor on the bulkhead in the aft stateroom. It would be over the propeller shaft in that location.

Anyone have any experience with this?

My fluxgate compass is also in the bilge area just forward of the main bilge. Seems like the best place for it to me.

I have a 40.5 legend and the fluxgate is mounted behind the prop shaft gland on the bulkhead. Almost the same area that you are suggesting. Works fine.

Thanks Steve, mine was in the main bilge, now I have to shorten the wire so I won't be able to reach that next chamber.

How does yours work there?

Just be mindfull of what you put near it. it is a compass and metal objects do affect it.

Like Bill Roosa, the flux gate for my autopilot on my H34 is mounted on the bulkhead behind the stuffing box per the attached pic. Has worked fine in that location.

Yup..Mine is in the same space as Dan's except it is on the fore/aft stringer immediately to the right of dan's in the picture. Since the 34 has a cast iron keel, I was trying to get it as far away from big iron chunks as was practical. If your keel is not iron, the engine and any errant magnetic devices (bilge pump wires, tools, aerosol cans, etc) are all to be worried about.
