Flushing Lines

Peggy: What's the proper way to flush out the head lines, especially the vent. Do you stick the hose down the toilet until water flows out the vent line? We started out the season with a smell from the vent everytime we emptied the head. I'm using CP and KO for the first time and wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Maybe it just needed a little foreign matter to get started on.

What model boat?

As Peggy will probably tell you, KO doesn't work equally well on all models. If the vent is inadequate, it can't do its job.

Bob: To answer your question, we flush our vent every time we pump the tank. Our process is as follows: 1. Pump tank. 2. Put the hose in the vent and let run for about 30 seconds. 3. Put the hose down in deck fitting (pump out) and let it run for several minutes 3-4 gals of water. 4. Pump out the tank again. 5. Put chemicals in the tank and flush with about 1/2 gal + of water. We have had the black hose from West Marine in our boat for over 10 years and only have a slight head odor when someone does not flush throughly.

I don't think flushing the vent line will solve

your problem. I think the REAL problem is: your tank isn't adequately ventilated for K.O. to get the oxygen it needs to work. Try Odorlos in the tank before you do anything else.

CONNECT CITY WATER TO ...

your tank vent line by disconnecting the line from the tank and connecting the city water to it. The water pressure should clear out any blockage in the vent line. I had to stick a small screw driver into my scupper in order to break the critter's nest loose. Do the same with the toilet discharge line by disconnecting it from the toilet and connecting the city water line to it. The pressure should break loose any blockage in the discharge line. Terry

I wouldn't recommend connecting

any hose used to fill a potable water tank or one that will be connected to a dock water hook-up to a holding tank vent or ANY part of your sanitation system. If you're gonna do that, use a separate hose that's never used for anything else except washing the boat. No matter what hose you use, I'd think twice about trying to blast a clog out of a sanitation hose that way too. Boat plumbing isn't designed to withstand "city" water pressure...you could get a nasty surprise and still have a clog to deal with.

Peggy Odorlos

Peggy: Can I use Odorlos with your products? Also, is this something I can pick up at any boat store? Thanks!

Answer is yes...

However, there's no reason to use it WITH K.O. Odorlos is a complete product on its own. Instead of needing oxygen, it uses nitrogen to promote oxygen release from the waste itself...and it's completely compatible with C.P. I know WM carries it...I don't know who else does.
