Has anyone trailered to the Keys? Our thoughts were to put in at Marathon, sail down to Key West on one side and back up the other. Looking at maybe taking 2 weeks for the sailing. Any suggestions or advice?

I know the keys pretty well.

can you better clarify your plans? what time of year, where are you going to launch, keep the truck/trl, anchor out, or marina's?

do you have current charts? and when you say come back the other side, did you mean going outside to the west, aound the barrier islands? (comming in at either big pine, or marathon).

pls clarify, and I'll try to help.

fyi: linky to noaa charts and google satilite mashup... (slow but good)

the west side can be knarly and shallow from what I have read. Lots of mini "islands". There are a few places to pass b/t the sides though.

I have sailed out of key largo and bahia honda key. Both great sails and islands....never did any extended cruising though. Bahia Honda has a great anchorage...with the right wind you can sail right between the old bridge segments.

...local knowledge strongly recommended for the backcountry...
but would be nice for a long kayak trip...
east coast side both ways, best bet.

OTOH, you could use big spanish channel, or 7 mile bridge, going south...but you'd have to stay outside the whole way... then come back east coast on calm day with good sun, I could recommend going to KW to west.
