Next week, during the Christmas Holiday, from Wednesday through Sunday, my wife Janet and I are planning to explore the Florida Gulf coast between Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City by car. We might even go as far as Port St. Joe, Apalachicola or Apalachee Bay area south of Tallahassee as it looks interesting on the map. I have never visited this area although my wife has been to Destin. We would be grateful of any recommendations of what to visit, see and do in this area or recommendations for good restaurants. E-mail us at westabrooks@unctv.org Thanks in advance for any advice. Wayne & Janet - s/v Wind Drift h340

Rick, can you share the information? My wife and I are going to the same places at the same time. Thanks jjv@jjverb.com

IMHO, the area around Tallahassee is surprisingly like eastern NC (I'm from New Bern.) I lived a year in Tallahassee 10 years ago and, well, I haven't been back since! Unless they have changed, things are a long way apart and there isn't much in between (visualize Beaufort to New Bern via 101, or driving the countryside near Oriental.) Apalachicola is a cross between Oriental and Arapahoe. I think the father west you go, the better it gets, e.g., Pennsacola, Destin, etc. At least friends of mine love it. I haven't been there but plan to someday. Enjoy.

Port St. Joe Marina

Whenever I get a chance I offer praise to the Port St. Joe Marina. Great facilities, staff, and restaraunt (excellent remoulade sauce). Check it out! Mark Major, s/v Lesismor 86H23

Two Things Come to Mind

The Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola NAS is something not to miss. There are "rumblings" about and our Threat Condition has been upgraded to Bravo so access may be hampered check with them before you try to go. Something else on the other side of Fort Walton Beach is Seaside it is the town in which the movie "The Truman Show" was filmed they probably have some nice Christmas displays. It is a really neat place to see. National Museum of Naval Aviation 1750 Radford Blvd. Suite C N.A.S. Pensacola, Florida 32508 (850) 452-3604 or (850) 452-3606 Fax: (850) 452-3296 e-mail: Naval.Museum@smtp.cnet.navy.mil

Thanks

Don, Rick & Mark, Thanks for all of your suggestions. At a Holiday party this evening we met a former resident of Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach. He said Seaside is a must see also. John, maybe we will run into you along the way. Wayne & Janet Estabrooks
