floorboards, how to make not such a tight fit

So I am wondering if anyone else has tried to get up the floorboards to check the bilge or close and open thru hulls only to find that there is no way you can just pull it up with your finger in the boards hole.

The wood swells in the summer, and the fit is just too tight.

I am contemplating sanding down the edges, basically just taking say 1/8" off, but it seems the wood is sealed, and I don't know how to seal it again.

Has anyone done this and could give me what worked and didn't. thanks.

It's a common problem, you can sand down the edges, a little more than you need and reseal with marine varnish.

Try a little paste wax first.
