Dear Fellow Sailors,

Can I use 5200 to glue an inflatable dinghy? Does anyone have a better idea?

Thanks,
Mark

I've used HH-66 VINYL CEMENT on our dinghy to glue handles back on. I'm not sure what your floor is made of. If it's vinyl this will work.

There are predominately two materials that are used to construct a dinghy. PVC or Hypalon. I am a fan of using the two-part adhesives that are formulated for those materials. I have had relatively poor luck with one-part adhesives. I am not at all familiar with HH-66 Vinyl Cement. YMMV.

Perhaps try Stabond U-148 two-part adhesive. Good for PVC or Hypalon. I used it to repair a blown seam on my PVC RIB a few months back. Still holding well. Ships out of New Jersey although made here in Garden Grove, CA.

I got my first inflatable in 1971. I've tried everything over the years and have settled for Metregrip 303 Epoxy. If it will glue diamonds and other stones to metal....
However, it isn't all about the adhesive, as usual it is all about preparation! I've found that sanding until the sheen is off the tube (or whatever part you are gluing) and threads are just beginning to show in the two pieces to be glued, is necessary. Then it should be cleaned of all contaminants including oil from your hands with acetone.Use clean rubber gloves from then on.
If you are gluing to a curved surface, then it must be curved when gluing. Putting a flat patch on something flexible like a dinghy won't last long. This will limit your ability to roll it up for storage though. We hold the glued area in place by hand to insure it doesn't move from where we want it.It usually begins to dry in about an hour.
We've gotten as much as 5 years on the lifting tangs we apply to hold the 500# dink on the davits. Every night and every inter-island crossing with all that torque.....
Good luck. By the way, there are so many better products, specifically made for any job, that I can't imaging a single place on any boat where I would use 5200.

I’ve had the exact same problem. I’ve tried the H66 with limited success and it failing after a season. What appears to be working for me is the two part adhesive (expensive), glueing the floor back into the tube then glueing overlapping pieces of vinyl over the joint to reinforce it all. It has lasted 2 plus seasons
