This will probably never happen to me but..

What if your boat flips over or just heels to the horizontal?
What about those heavy batteries below the floor boards?

Could they fall onto the ceiling? Make a hole? Smack me?

Hi Roy,
I keep meaning to install heavy straps to secure my batteries which
(like yours?) are on the shelf under floorboards just aft of the keel
well.

I just hate drilling holes - especially below the waterline...

But it is definitely on my list of Things To Be Done (tm)...

I've secured my batteries with some hard rubber wedges (the sort used
for door wedges) between the battery and the side of the well. Seems to
work OK but I've never been upside down and hopefully never will.

I fashioned a cleat attached to the under side of the floorboards on
one end. I intend to install some sort of pull ring/latch on the
other end but to date have not got around to it. A wooden cleat
across the top of the batteries and under the floor would be
additional security.

Peter,
So that's a wooden bar across the top of the battery?
The battery seems longer than the standard automotive size, or is that just my eyes?

Also, you mentioned the need to finish mahogany. I have some mahogany washboards that I am about to use. Do you like any specific type of finish for the mahogany?

Thanks,
Roy

Roy,
The bar is a scrap of Black Walnut ... very tough. The aft (engine)
battery is a regular sized one, but the forward cabin battery is a
Group 29, a bit larger. The two just fit in nicely, although will be
due for replacement soon as the sticker on them says "Year 2000".

For varnish on outside-facing wood go for the one with the best UV
protection. I've been using Cetol Light topcoated with Cetol Gloss,
(just because it's 'in stock') but there are other products out there.
Varnished wood on the exterior sure looks nice, but then there's the
maintenance factor ...

Good day!

For a good 2 years we are the happy owner of Sepia V3273

With the proper Volvo banging happily everytime we need to get in or out of
port.

We bought the Vega with everything in good shape only the engine was a bit
of question mark.

The 30 year old beast is walking/running it's last miles (and who can, not
forgive him?)

But it lost some compression, and starts a bit unwillingly after a few cold
days.

When it run though it powers on like a charm?

This is all fine and good but how much smoke is the Volvo aloud?

The smoke is blue/white and certainly when it's starts after a while, one
may think one is at the brink of a new world war

But when I look at other Vega's this also seems to be the case.

Is this normal?

Before donating a hefty sum to the mechanic funds of need,

I thought it was wise to just ask if I do a complete revision (together with
the axle, the original one)

And be done with it for at least a couple of years,

Would it clear the smoke?Or is the smoking bit a Volvo one, and could only be fixed by a newer
engine?

(Which is much cheaper than a revision of the old one???)

With kind and further quite happily regards,

Jelle H. Buisma

Roy-
I recently made new cockpit lids useing mahogany. I used biscuits to
join the boards and used epoxy for glue. Then coated the entire
cover with 2 coats of West special coating epoxy. Over that several
coats of Interlux Perfection varnish. I'm hopeing that it will last
longer that regular marine varnish. It better because that varnish
is expensive!
