Hi all,

I'm new to the site so thanks for having the resource available!

I own a rather unique boat - it a remodel of a 1913 Gill Smith Cat boat from the GSB is Long Island, NY that was built in the 1970's by my dad.

Here's my issue - the deck was at one time beautifully varinished steam bent curved fir. My problem is I live in Florida and while the deck is structurally sound, it is stained. Not for lack of elbow grease, I have not been able to get it back to the condition I would like and maintaining varnish in the Sunshine state is just more trouble than it's worth. So, I have been looking at applying Flexiteak over the deck and I'm looking for anyone who may have applied this product over wood in the past? If yes, what are the "gotcha's" and are there any pearls of wisdom you can share?

Regards,

Dennis Foster

The material you are referring to is a sheet plastic, I expect it would trap moisture and quickly rot the deck in the dark dampness. There are better options than varnish. Cetol comes to mind. Have no experience with fir decking, most wood decks are done in teak or mahogany and simply oiled. That may be an option. Would be a shame to damage her on your watch.

What have you tried to bleach out the stains?

Better options would be canvas or paint.

teak is a nonskid made by nature and is good--stains are irrelevant to decking. sea water treats teak. varnish causes death at sea due to slipping on the shiny and smooth surface. please post pix so we can see the project you are accomplishing.
