Flag Halyard

I received as a Christmas gift a flag and i am looking for advice on a halyard to hoist it. I sail a Catalina 27 with a back stay or I have seen the kits that West Marine sell's that attaches to the spreader. To be honest the West Marine products looks cheap and I am not thrilled about drilling holes into a spreader and attaching a block that looks like it will fail or rust in short order. Do must of you build your own out of spare parts or is there a better way? Thanks, jack

WM Kit works fine

We had the same reservations but finally just bought the kit available at West Marine (I think the signal halyard kit is actually made by Johnson, who makes good fittings, pelican hooks, etc.) Bottom line is that it works fine and still looks and functions like it did on the day it was installed. There was no problem drilling the small holes to mount the thing. In fact, looking at boats in our marina, it seems that virtually all of them have the exact same setup. While it would be trivial to create your own out of more expensive parts, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend the WM kit. Gary Kunkel Catalina 30 "Folie A Deux" Channel Islands Harbor, CA

Mine sounds like the West Marine type.

I have a C30 with aluminium spreaders. There is an eye with a block screwed into the underside of the starboard spreader about half way out along the length of the spreader. Next there is a small cleat @ 3" long which is screwed into the deck below. Flag line looks like it is about 1/8 " diameter. It was installed on the boat years ago by the look of it. Works well and no rust or signs of weakness. Ken

Another reason for doing it

You can use it to hoist a radar reflector for low visibility sailing. Mark

If the flag is an American flag, it should not be flown from a spreader halyard.

Why not just get a flag staff .....

and put it on the stbd stern quarter (starboard side of the transom).

If you fly the American flag on a state registered or USCG documented pleasure vessel it should be flown either from a halyard on the starboard side of the vessel, at the main gaff, or approximately 1/3 below the masthead on the backstay. The only flag that is properly flown from a staff on the stern is a yacht ensign or power squadron flag. Dennis W. S/V FullSailed

I do believe if you check Chapmans you will find that the country of origin should never be flown from the spreader halyard.

Re: Chapmans

Higgs, Please recheck your Chapman. It is only recently that a stern staff display of the U.S. Ensign has been acceptable, and never if you are involved in a race. Please check section: Flag display afloat and ashore, pg 571 58th edition. You are correct to fly from stern staff at anchor. I stand corrected. Dennis W. S/V FullSailed
