Fixing Stainless Steel Scratches

How do I fix a scratch (small gouge) in stainless steel (pulpit).

I have a Dremil and was thinking that it might work with a polishing wheel.

If it's a really bad scratch, you can start by using some wet dry sandpaper. First use a 320 or 400 grit and gradually work to a fine grit like 1200. Then use your Dremel tool with some really fine polishing rogue made for metal polishing to buff out the fine scratches left behind by the sandpaper. It's best to use a different buffing wheel for each grade so that you don't introduce coarse grits on the final buff and ruin the mirror finish.

Dremmel & Paper

I used the dremmel first to remove the gouge and then worked my way through 2000 grit paper and then some nano polish. Can't tell it was there. The previous owner had a flag staff clamped on to the sternrail and it must have spun or something.

Wow, I just put a scratch in the stainless bow pulpit and remembered you had just asked the question. I'll send before and "I give up" pictures when I go back to do the work. In 4-6 foot seas I had the Delta come off the bow roller so I'm very upset with myself for not checking it before I left. :cussing:
