Fixing my rudder

Can anyone give me some advice on resurfacing my rudder? There are small nicks however the rudder is in good shape. I planned to sand the whole rudder down fill the cracks and resurface. Any suggestions on what to fill the cracks with (Is marine polyurethane sealant sufficient) or on what to cover the rudder with? Thanks

Many years ago I loaned my h23 to my yacht club as a committee boat for a race I was unable to attend, and it came back with some prop gouges in the side of the rudder blade. I filled them with "MarineTex," sanded it down flush, then coated the entire blade with WestSystems epoxy. Its been fine since then.
