Fixing a toilet

I have a Catalina 25 1982 model(?). For all I know, the toilet in the boat is the original. On a recent outing, the plunger stopped pulling water to flush and pump dry. I was thinking this may be a gasket that has worn out or some silicone grease needs to added. Does this sound like a problem that can be fixed by taking the plunger portion of the toilet apart or would the whole toilet need to be replaced? With either of the scenarios, where is a good place to get replacement parts? Any assisstance that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the world of sailing, and I want to learn all I can. Thank you

It's called a "head" in sailboat lingo

Try buying the beast book ever written about the subject. Go here: http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/menunew.tpl?fno=31 Right on this website.

head fix

hey Thompson, I have bought the book and its a great way to get started. theres parts list for the popular modeles. and a lot of info to learn , I switched to a fresh water for the head to get rid of oders . It worked thanks peggy. call the company for a spacific part ,but I would get the full rebuild kit and see if its in there. The kit says you should rebuild every year but I think thats a bit much. I have also rebuilt my head .the kit was $70 and the same toilt new was $150. It took over 4 hours to do with a good dose of stress. (first time is the hardest) anyway if you want to up grade the head nows the time. run a gallon or 2 of fresh water though the head before you take it apart . bring rubber gloves and two rolls of paper towels and disifectent spray to clean up . Its not hard second time will be a breeze
