Thanks Frank

Thanks for the info, I checked out your website. My portlights have multiple screws on the interior through a moulding, and into the cabinside I presume(they aren't visable on the exterior). Can this moulding be found for new replacement. I looked already. Just placing the lexan piece on the outside of the cabinside and bedding thems to be a concern for me, If I followed scotts and your conversation correctly?

I have a 1984 Hunter 34 that had leakinf ports. I replaces and rebedded the Beckson opening ports already. I removed the old ports, allowed to dry and dug our some rotted core plywood, Filled with the Wesat System & filler, and replaced. MY QUESTION IS? Does any one have the information on removing and replaciong the fixed window on the cabin sides? I figure that I can replace with a lexan panel? But I don't know if others have experienced this issue. I know this year and age had leaky ports and some moisture or even wet cabin sides, so other Hunter Owners help me. Thanks Rob

You've done great so far, given the brittle nature of these ports. You risk breaking the other ones, and it may be hard to find replacements since they're so old. My suggestion would be to quit while you're ahead. Make a very fine bead of Lifeseal clear caulk to seal the ports instead. The bead will be virtually invisible and the problem will be solved in terms of future water penetration.

I did this exact thing. It is a fairly difficult job but you can do it too. Use the Dow 795 adhesive, spacers, clean the surfaces well and give it a few days to set while holding it well in place. Silicon sealant will not do the job except in the short term and maybe not then. My advice is do it right. You will not regret it. Call Hunter for their assistance too. They are really helpful.

GO FOR IT

I had the same problem replaced all four last summer six hour job. Removed old ports traced on to new 1/4" lexan cut with jig saw used 3m double sided foam tape between frame and lexan finished sealing with caulk worked and looks great on my H34

Me too, go for it.

I used SSG4000AC GE silicone. It's the good stuff. Patrick, isn't Dow 795 also silicone? Sure rings a bell. Rob, don't rush the job. Carefully remove the old lenses so that you can have exact duplicates made by a shop if you don't do it yourself. Note (On an 86 H34) the edges are beveled. Also keeping the old ones allows you to match up the drill holes for the screws in the new lenses. Here's a picture of the 'after' work in case your boat is different. I'm not sure which of the early H34s had the frames. Another option for you, in case you have frames is to eliminate them. Just have lenses made to cover the frame area. Good luck.

How are they assembled

My '85 Hunter 37 has 4 fixed portlights with some sort of plastic moulding. I don't remember seeing any screws anywhere. How do you remove and what keeps them affixed?

Scott, those are the original factory screws in

the original holes. The screw heads used to be black but the color faded away. Now they show but I don't care. One other install point for anyone doing this work is to be sure to remove the old silicone. The stuff WILL NOT stick to itself.

Fred, have you an interior pic?

Look like you screwed lenses to cabin trunk. Any trim or moulding pieces anywhere? My lenses sit in some sort of plastic chanel moulding and if there are any screws they are dinky. I've eyeballed the things from time to time and could never figure out how they went in or out.

Do I have INTERIOR PICTURES???

Just a few! :) This one is inside of the first one. Note the tape on the inside of the windows to keep the silicone off. You could also just leave the sticky back paper in place. The mounting screws only go into the outer cabin. You might find some more details on my web site. This is photo #33 if you want to see a larger version. On second thought, we were probably varnishing the interior moulding. The windows you see in this earlier shot were replaced. (probably)

So Fred, interior trim is for looks

and doesn't have any sealing function because your portlight lenses are "plastered" onto the outside of the cabin trunk? Did I get that right? I need to post a pic of what I have to deal with, but can't find any on this machine.

That's pretty accurate Scott.

I'm not sure that these windows need a much fancier mounting method, so yeah, they're 'plastered'
