The two fixed ports on the port side of our 1994 Legend 37.5 are cracking and must be replaced. We have purchased the ports from Hunter, and need advice on how to install them. Has anyone replaced any of these ports? How do you hold them in place while the adhesive dries? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Jack Pavesich

Advice I got...

was from a Hunter employee named Al Fookes, you might ask for him at 800-771-5556. I was lucky enough to find an ex-Hunter dealer in my area who employed a lady who had experience in replacing the fixed ports you are dealing with. I was out of town when she did both port side ports on my 35.5 and didn't get to watch. Here are some things I remember from research: 1)once old port is removed (piano wire or guitar string works best) the opening MUST be ABSOLUTELY clean of all traces of old adhesive. 2) Before applying new sealer, mask off around the outside of the opening very close to edges with blue painters tape. 3) You MUST use the correct Dow product, I believe it is #795, make sure it's "fresh" as it has expiration date. NO other product will hold up. 4)they cut some pieces of 2x4 and made braces off the lifelines and stantions that held the ports in while the Dow product set up. 5)the LONGER the boat can sit without being used, the better the repair will be. Premature flexing of the cabin may make the ports pop out. Wish I had been there to watch...that's about all I can offer. You can buy the ports and Dow product direct from Hunter.

And to clean off the old sealer

You might try this stuff;http://www.amtexchemical.com/pages/1/page1.html?refresh=1067351487284 I assume your old sealer is silicone. Tough to remove,,,in fact, almost impossible. If you buy this stuff, please report back and let us know how it works.

NO...

the original would have been the Dow product, that's all they ever used and the ONLY thing they advise for replacement. Call Hunter, talk to some people, check around your local area to see if anyone has experience with these ports, if not, dive on in and just do it!

Honey

Dow 795 is silicone based. I can't think of a single adhesive used to seal ports that isn't.

Removing fixed ports

I have at least 5 leaking ports to re-set this off-season. Please explain further how this is done with piano (guitar) wire, or whatever is better. Thanks.
