Fixed Port Replacement

Alright, I have been planning to replace my fixed ports with smoked plexiglass as I have seen both on ericson sites and in those DIY boat mags. Question is, what thickness plexiglass should I use? I have seen articles that say to use 1/4" and I have seen some that say 3/8". I would think the 1/4" would be better as it is a little more pliable and would easily hug the shape of the cabin sides, but you may need the structural strength of the 3/8". Anyone have thoughts on this. Thanks, -Stefan

porthole clarification

I was planning a replacment tha wou;d involve cutting the plexiglass about an inch or two wider than the port opening and bolting it through the cabin sides, I'm just wondering if I can get away with using 1/4" ,(cheap) or for structural purposes should I use 3/8",(expensive)?

Dark more important?

If darkening is important, then why not consider the darkening films used for car window? The glass ports I would judge is stronger and better then the typical plastic models.

Lexan Ports

I have Lewmar Lexan ports on an E34 and they are so badly crazed from sun damage that they need replacing. I will not use Lexan.

Custom Made Plexiglass Ports or Stock?

Were you able to order from Lewmar the replacement plexiglass ports for your Ericson? I have a 38-200 and wonder if I have to go to a local company to have them custom-made or can I order pre-cut from Lewmar. Also want to replace several of the hatches which I presume are also plexiglass and wonder if I must go to Lewmar in the US. I'm in Vancouver, BC.
