Fix for oil leak at rear of combi... (temporary!)

It is simply 3 oil seals which were cut to allow them to be slipped over the shaft and then secured with superglue and a hose clamp. The whole lot is covered with epoxy resin to bind it to the rear casing of the combi and hey presto! Oil leak is cured (for now) and i think an engineer could fabricate a plate to house the new "external" seals or use the stern gland packing stuff which could be bolted onto the combi back plate. I may get one made up in Cadiz if it gets me that far!

Anyway it seems to be keeping the oil at bay for now so I am back in action.

The water leak was from the exhaust u bend at the back - just a loose hose clamp and the dynastart has stopped making a funny noise to all is well on the mechanical front for now.!

Hi John,

Congratulations for your skills for fixing the problem! I would got pretty stressed...
If you plan to stop in Cadiz, try Marina Puerto America. I was there about 1 month ago. The fee for the Vega was 9.4 euro/day. I had a problem on my MD7A water pump easily fixed by a friendly and cheap marina mechanic. This marina is at walking distance from Cadiz old town. In case the probel is too big, I heard that In Porto Sherry there is high level mechanical support.

Fair winds,
marco

Hi John. Congrats.
I've always thought that a "C" seal (cut seal) might work.

Did you line up the 3 seal so cuts not adjacent?

Full marks for initiative - look forward to hearing from Steve & the other experts!

Good luck.

Hi John

Good idea but the main oil seal in the reduction gearbox will still be leaking and allowing oil to get into the Combi. It will fill up and leak at the next seal or gasket as the Combi is not a sealed item, unlike the engine. Only time will tell, fingers crossed!

Cheers

Many thanks Marco - Puerto America it is! I hope it stays fixed - it
was getting down having to mop up oil all the time! Hopefully I shall
get some time to enjoy myself instead of constantly repairing stuff!

Yes - all cuts at the top but staggered - 10, 12 and 2 o'clock.. I
just hope the epoxy bond to the casing holds out!. If I were at home
I could fabricate a plate to hold the extra seals and extend the 3
bolts that hold the back plate on (use studding) and then I could
tighten it up and make a permanent fix. Also it means that the seals
are now aligned with the shaft - not fixed in the backplate. Fingers
crossed!

Just getting ready to go back out to the cruel sea tomorrow - yuk!
Forecast looks ok - but it is a longish haul so I will be tired.

Made sweet and sour tuna fish tonight! I really must start planning
meals! Ate it straight out of the pan - luvly jubly!

Yes - I thought of that but I am trying to keep the oil level as low
as I can (half way between max and min) - just hoping it will be ok
for a while! I think the only real solution will be a new motor - it
will give me peace of mind if nothing else.
