I'm considering installing an inverter on my catalina 30. Has anyone got any words of advice, for example where to store addtional house batteries, how many to install, problems with cabling or using a wind generator?

Only thing to ABSOLUTELY do
is make sure you install a Blue Seas 8032, either / or switch for shorepower vs inverter power, and if you have a separate switch for a charger on your panel, make sure it's off when the inverter's on. Have no idea about your energy budget or the size of your batteries or the size of your boat, so can't help otherwise.
