Fitting a bigger anchor on a Hunter 45cc

Hi Everyone!

Just joined the forum so thank you in advance for your advice.

I purchased a 2006 Hunter 45cc last fall. It currently has a 44lb Delta on it. It seems a tad small to me for anchoring out in the Long Island Sound and New England waters. I was looking at either a Mantus 65lb M1 or a Rocna 73lb. I'm open to other suggestions as well.

My question is will it fit on the standard bow roller without interfering with anything? I measured and even made a cardboard cutout of the Mantus. It looks tight but doable. Just don't want to get it wrong.

Wondering if anyone could provide guidance that has fitted a larger anchor?

Thanks!

I also thought the original 44 Delta was under size for our 2007 44DS, which I believe has the same hull as your 45CC. I purchased a CQR 60 lb anchor and added 150 ft of 5/16 HT chain, which was the chain size on the windlass. That combination has served us well. The only difficulty I had, and this also applied to the Delta, was that the anchor shank impacted the jib furling drum in recovery as the anchor seated in the cat. So I corrected that by simply installing a small roller in the cat just forwarded on the drum. So that when the anchor was recovered, the second roller forced the shank down and under the drum. I suspect that would also be the case with your boat and the anchors you mentioned. However, YMMV as Hunter seemed to install different cats in the same model.
Good luck
Rick

Welcome Z83.

Your Delta is undersized but not because of it's weight. It simply has a lot less fluke area than more modern Rocnas or Spades or Mantus anchors. You can see the "lineup" here in one of these links. The worst thing you can do is oversize your anchor. Use the anchor manufacturers' websites. They almost all have instructions for sizing. Most also have dimenions so you can check. Rick's concern about hitting the furling drum are well found. Many of us have raised the drum off the deck with long link plates because of just this issue.

Thanks for all the feedback folks! Going to try to call Mantus again and see if there is someone who can talk to me in more detail about fitting the anchor. It seems like it's worth going through the trouble to size up the anchor.

Thought i'd add this in case anyone else could use the info. In a google search I found a Hunter 45cc that was for sale that looked like it had a Mantus on it. Contacted the owner and he graciously replied. he verified that he had a Mantus 65 M1 and that it fit. Said that he used the anchor mate from Mantus and that he replaced the back roller. Also said it would contact the bottom of the furling drum when it deployed so he would help it along but that it came up without trouble. He also spoke very highly of the product.

I think I'm going to get one with his suggested setup and see what happens. Happy to update this thread in a month once I have it to see if it works for me as well.

Thanks again!

Z83, How did it go with the Mantus 85lb setup?
It went very well, no modification needed. We did upgrade the windlass to a 1500 quick and we love that, we went with a 3/8" G chain, 200'. WE were in key west with 50+kts blow in 25' of water and 200' out, we did not budge. We have been through 8 +- 35+ kt blows with higher gusts since, nothing other than the hunter dance which we bought the trim sail for, need to fit it and try it out.
On the anchor I only replaced the rollers as they were worn. Love the setup, we get comments when moving through an anchor field, we hear "impressive" among other comments about nobody takes ground tackle seriously anymore. I would not trade it.

On the dancing at anchor, my 45CC really moves a lot. Since there is no backstay I am trying to figure a way to fit a riding sail. Please tell me about the "trim sail" that you mentioned.

www.bannerbaymarine.com is what I went with. Yes, I could have sewed one together but specs would be different, Jess from Banner Bay had the Nasa CFD to show how it worked, I am an engineer and can understand it and that worked for me. I posted in a Hunter sailing group asking folks about this and it was pretty unanimous on the folks who had them that they work significantly well and reduced the swing by 60% to some saying almost perfect. Call Jess, he has some great ideas on how to rig them also.
