OK OK I know this isn’t a sailing question but my boat is on the hard for the winter. My son and I want to head to Florida with our kayaks and do so kayaking on the West coast along some of the barrier islands. Anyway do you need any type of license to fish along these islands? In Maine you can fish in salt water without a fishing license I assume you do not need one in Florida either? By the way any suggestions on good places to go?

You need a license

If you are fishing from land or something affixed to land (bridge, dock, etc) in saltwater, you DO NOT need a license. If you are fishing in saltwater from a kayak or other boat, you DO need a license. Freshwater, you always need a license. If your son is under 16, he doesnt need a license. I suggest Pine Island Sound (Pine Island, Matlacha, Boca Grande, Captiva, Sanibel) recognized as one of the hottest fishing destinations in the world. This is my backyard and I do alot of kayak fishing here. Here is a link to the license rules. http://myfwc.com/license/

Oh yeah

Forgot to tell you to wait till you get here to get your license, all you have to do is walk into Walmart and you get your license in 2 minutes. You can also get one over the cell phone as you see a Marine Patrol boat heading your way HA!

Pearson 323 panama city
Saint Joseph Pennisula State park

My wife and I took our kayaks there and had a great time. You have about 12 miles of undeveloped shoreline. We were there a month or so ago and a couple of times during the summer on our Pearson 323 and there are always people fishing. Lots of nature too....eagles, sharks, turtles and gators if you go up a creek. Very nice campground except for a few aggressive racoons that will join you for dinner...uninvited!!! We had one opening our tent's zipper while we were in the tent. The pennisula runs north-south and the wind is mostly out of the southwest. But we have seen some good chop when the wind is out of the south. If you aren't very lucky there is good sea food in the area. Tom
