I heard through the grapvine that there were a few free transient moorings in West Harbor, Fishers Island, in LI Sound. Has anyone else heard about them? I tried to find a number for the harbormaster but no luck yet.

You can anchor there...

...but with caution. There are a number of reefs in that harbor, but if you are careful then you should be OK. An alternative is to go up into Mystic. I understand from a Mystic handout that there are 7 town moorings up thru the second bridge and just beyond Mystic Seaport off the side of the channel. Then you can tuck in behind Mason Island if you are in a pinch. But be very careful and check your charts. There is a reef there that many people hit because they misread their charts. Of course there are also many marinas along the Mystic River. I stayed at Noank Village Boatyard on a mooring for $25 this summer. And very nice amenities, free launch service and nice people there.

fishers island

about a month ago i picked up a mooring marked for the fishers island yacht club. I knew it had not been used for weeks based on the amount of muck on the lead. No one to be found Fri afternoon, a neighbor said that the mooring manager would return mon morning around 9 am. I was long gone. Come to think of it why even stop there, Mystic is more fun.

Just throw Anchor!

Why don't you just throw Anchor to the left of the yatch club on fishers. You can land your dingy on a small beach between the private home left of the yatch club and the club itself. That is what I did a couple of years ago when I was crusing around the sound on my mac 21'. It is very protected so it doesn't take much to hold you there. The yatch club rates are way over priced, probally to keep transient boaters away. Here is a secrect...after about four the staff are usally gone from the club so you can use the bathroom or shower free:). one alternative is to moor in Niantic bay yatch club several miles west of Fisher's they are cheap and very nice. But the best thing you could possible do it skip all those places and sail straight to Block Island! It is the most beautiful place in New England and has plently of places to moor, dock or anchor in both harbors.
