Fish finders?

I am looking for an economical way to replace my 20 year old depth sounder and knot log. Niether is reliable. One option is a Fish Finder with a Speed and temp. sensor. Has anyone out there tried this? Can anyone give me information on a transom mount transducer vs a thru-hull.

Depth Sounders: so many choices

I recently installed a depth finder on an O'Day 23 that never had one. I beleive it was a Uniden, from Boat US ($119.00). This unit is what they call a "shoot through" model. The "hockey puck" style transducer is mounted on the inside of the hull, bedded in silicon glue (with absolutely no air bubbles). This unit worked flawlessly for me. But, it has one drawback. As your keel just touches bottom, the unit cannot be re-calibrated to display "0"depth. Uniden has one other model that has a temperture feature for a few bucks more.

I installed a humminbird this spring

While far from economical, I went with their gps/chartplotter/fishfinder, for about $650 and it's great. The sensor is a hocky puck "shoot through" like Bob discribed and since it has a built in GPS that solves the knotmeter problem. The chartplotter feature is fantastic, and has become one of those little upgrades that I don't know how I did without.
