I have been looking through the archives on how and where to place a fish finder transducer. I have a through the hull one and would hate to put a hole in a boat with no bilge. In the archives they say to shoot through the hull but do i need a new transducer or use the one I have? It wasn't very clear. The transducer is about a 3" trangle. it does xy readings not that I need them. also do you have to be in water to test it. I understand how to use ky jelly or a zip lock bag to find a good spot but will it work while it's on the trailer? The boat is not rdy to go in the water yet having prob with the front lower shrowds being too loose. I am also working on checking the swing keel pin. Thanks for the help, Glen

transducer

I don't know if this helps you but on the catalina 25 site in the tech help someone posted how to install a tranducer without drilling through the hull. See the link below. From my understading, fiberglass has the same density as water so the transducer should shoot through the hull without a problem.

transducer mounting

Clean a spot on the inside of the hull where you want to mount the transducer. Mix a batch of epoxy very carefully so there will be no bubbles. Coat the transducer and ease the unit into the epoxy sort of slideways to avoid any bubbles. I'm told silicone will work too and some prefer to make a little well box and fill it with water...sink the unit into that.
