We have an 1981 Cherubini Hunter 27. This is our first time to own a boat up north (Chicago area) and we will be winterizing the boat ourselves. Is there anyone that has any tips/help on how to winterize a boat? Thanks!

Winterizing Plumbing

The article "winterizing plumbing" in the Head Mistress forum (link is on the forum homepage) provides complete instructions for winterizing the fresh water and sanitation systems.

Need a checklist?

Some of the folks have asked for a checklist. My Excel spreadsheet(for a 1979 H37C) might be helpful. I do plumbing like Peggy tells me. :) Ed s/v Ladylove h37skipper@aol.com

Draining Fresh Water system this year

This year in am just draining the Fresh watter system. The last couple of years I have used the Pink stuff, but the water tastes like s@#$^%^& for 3/4 of the season. For the head, I will pour the pink anti freeze into it and pump through. For the engine I put several gallons of anti-freze into a bucket, the take off one of the water intake hoses, connect another hose to it and then use an electric pump to pump the anti-freeze through the system.

Gotta get ALL the water out of the plumbing, Ken

You can't just drain the tank...you'll have to blow ALL the water out the entire fresh water system if you want to protect it. Water expands when it freezes...damage only happens when trapped water freezes and expands more than the available expansion room, which is more likely to be in the plumbing than in the tank. Just pouring antifreeze down the toilet isn't enough to get the job done either...that won't protect the pump or the head intake. I strongly recommend that you follow ALL the directions in the article "Winterizing Plumbing" in the Head Mistress forum reference library (link is on the forum homepage). Recommissioning the fresh water system in the spring according to the directions in the "Fresh Water Maintenance" article there will completely get rid of all the antifreeze taste and smell (which prob'ly isn't ALL due to antifreeze anyway, but is caused by the molds and fungi that thrive in damp dark places--like boat hoses.

Here's what I do...

I change the engine oil, change the zinc anode, flush the engine with antifreeze and fresh water mix, top off the fuel, add additive to the fuel system, drain all fresh water lines and tank then vacuum any excess with wet/dry vac, pump out holding tank, take out all batteries and gear and store indoors, then wrap her up like a bug in a rug and count the days til the next splash!

I follow Peggie's instruction

and I just detach the cooling water input hose and pour coolant through a funnel into it while running the engine to replace the cooling water. David Lady Lillie

Check list would also be appreciated

Ed, I just closed on a 1979 H37C last Saturday in Racine WI. She has been layed up for 5 years, so needless to say needs some TLC. Your check list would be appreciated and I will definately looking for some advice in the near future. Thanks, Richard McDonald Pewaukee, WI rmcdonald@wi.rr.com
