Purchased a DS3 end of last year. It was an 87 and actually came with the original owners manual. I am really a picture kind of guy, and can't figure out the rigging part of the sail to the boom and mast. The manual had pictures, but technology isn' what it is today. There is a couple of blocks and cleats on the boom, but I can't figure out what goes to them. Are there any other sources to get the rigging right ? Some good pictures would be great.

Also, after uncovering the boat from the winter, I put the drain plug in so it wouldn't get lost. A month later, after some seriour rain, I pulled the plug, and it drained for quite some time. Any idea what to check, for leaks that find there way under the deck?

the blocks and cleats on the side of the boom are almost certainly for a slab (jiffy) reefing system. One reefing line at the aft end of the main, one at the fore end. Usually, the line is attached to one side of the boom, then reeved throught the sail's reefing cringle (the metal reinforced hole), then affixed to the other side of the boom. You ease the halyard so the main can come down, pull on the fore and aft reefing lines so the sail comes down in a slab, cleat off the reefing lines, then retighten the halyard. The newer standard systems are set up so you only have to yank on one reefing line.

I bet my Oday 23's reefing system and boom set up are similar to the DS's. I have a few photos of my Oday 23's boom set up (the aft reefing line anyway) that might be of help. Unfortunately, the website is not allowing me to insert images for some reason. If I can figure it out, I will post them later. Sorry about that.

Hukilau Mike read the instructions about formats accepted and image size. My first guess is your pictures are too large. If you have MS Paint open the picture and save as Jpeg. That alone reduces file size. If that does not make it small enought then crop, maybe make two pictures to illustrate point. You can also keep the content the same but just reduce image size, but that sometimes makes detail had to see.

Hukilau Mike,

First, if you have any questions using this web site our host is Captain Herring and the Moderator on this page is Maine Sail. Ask them for instructions.

Second, learn to read the whole web page. Log in and select email you want to read. Go to bottom and mash <submit reply>.

Hukilau Mike page two

Hukilau Mike,

First, if you have any questions using this web site our host is Captain Herring and the Moderator on this page is Maine Sail. Ask them for instructions.

Second, learn to read the whole web page. Log in and select email you want to read. Go to bottom and mash <submit reply>.
Then scroll further to "Whoa... don'd forget this stuff, its important" (In otherwords read the whole damn page top to bottom.)

See box that says <Upload Photos or Files Here>? If you do not see box you are in wrong place...

Low and behold up pops page that says "Upload Photos or Files Here" . And if you scoll down a little you see what files are accepted and sizes. Imagine instructions from Captain Herring?

Also if you ask questions on the "Ask an O'Day Owners" forum you get more and faster responses.

I see the problem: I was using the "quick reply" option, and it doesn't have those dialogue boxes or buttons on uploading photos.

Thanks- I take my first official sailing lessons this weekend from a pro school in Mystic. Thanks for the reply and the effort to get the pictures posted. I'll ask the instructor to explain what you said, for me. The boat apparently didn't come with the all the lines it could use. The manual had a list of all the lines I need but my sail doesn't have that extra "cringle". A lot to learn! Thanks again
