First sail of the year

First, I assume you are sailing on Kerr Lake or Buggs Island per Virginia sailors?

It would be more handy if we had two side views with one concentrating on the attachment area of the boom to the mast and the second of course at the top of the sail. I cannot tell if the sail is up all the way. In ADDITION, IS THIS THE ORIGINAL SAIL?

The 18.5 for those who are not familiar with this boat is a fixed shallow draft wing keel on a single axle that was replaced by the Hunter 19 water ballast. On the 18.5, the attachment of the boom is permanently affixed to the mast with no downhaul for the boom nor the sail except for the single reef point on the forward of the sail.

It would appear that the sail is up all the way with the sail fully extended backwards by the outhaul; however, additional side photos would verify what I suspect if the age of the sail is included. The 18.5 production was stopped sometime about 1991-1992.

I would tend to think if the sail is original, the sail material has stretched over the years while the bolt rope has shrunk. No amount of pulling or tugging will eliminate that. Then the only two options are to get a new sail or send the old one off to be repaired noting what I think is happening. It is also possible I sold that boat originally.

I hope this helps you sir.

Thank you Dave. I've wondered about that myself. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't the original sails.

Can you tell if the hull is cored? I'd like to wax the depth finder transducer inside the hull.

the hull is not cored. Not sure about the second question if you mean installation. For any depth finder, placement will depend on an area flat mostly in the forward section of the hull on the 18.5. Thru hull is best but there are other ways to attach to the bottom of the hull but the only thing to be aware if there are any air bubbles in the glass or installation of any kind other than thru hull, it will distort the findings.
