I have a 1985 Hunter 34 and I'm having the boat hauled out for the first time (besides the purchase survey) to mainly get a bottom paint job done. Anyone have any advice on what to look for in general, or things they would've liked to do but didn't while the boat was in the yard?

Thanks,

Chris

Can we say congratulations on your new sailboat??

Consider these out of the water maintenance items in no particular order;
  • Repair or replace stripping at the waterline
  • Inspect and replace thru hulls fittings and valves
  • Check bottom and keel for loss of barrier coat and reapply per directions
  • Apply antifoulant coating on propeller like Prop Speed, etc.
  • Check strut
  • Check cutless bearing
  • Check shaft
  • Check and repack stuffing box
  • Check rudder
  • Check propeller
  • Clean speed transducer paddle wheel

interesting question. did the purchase survey reveal any major issues?
I suggest looking at:
1. rudder. go over the entire surface of the rudder very carefully, especially check the bottom flat surface and the edges between the bottom and the sides of the rudder. make sure no delamination or cracking. jiggle the rudder to make sure no excessive play in the bearing.
2. check security of prop strut and make sure no excessive play in the cutlass bearing.
3. thru-hulls fittings. hunter used wood backing between the hull and the nut. this will compress over time, especially with the help of sea water. if in doubt, replace the thru-hulls.
4. keel. inspect entire surface of keel, especially the bottom and the keel/hull joint. if any rust if found, suggest using OSHO product which will neutralize the rust.

good luck.

I prefer dripless prop shaft seals. If you lean the same way, now would be the time to install one.

If you are painting the bottom yourself, be sure to put an extra coat or two on the waterline, keel and rudder-paint tends to wear thin in these areas first. I put two coats on the bottom and a couple extra on those and got almost seven years on my boat (SoCal) before it needed repainting.
