First filter change on 4JHE

After changing the lube oil filter and the two fuel oil filters, for the first time, and with everything running fine, I just need some affirmation on a couple of points. First, the lube oil capacity is stated at 6 liters. I was only able to pump out 4 quarts through the dip stick tube. Should I be able to get all the oil out of the engine, or did I give up too early with the hand pump (my arms were tired)? On the fuel filters, I did not fill the secondary spin on filter with fuel before I put the new one back on, but there is a priming squeeze bulb in the fuel line just upsteam from the primary filter. So I opened the vent screw in the top of the secondary filter housing and squeezed the priming bulb 20 times waiting for fuel to come out of the vent screw. When that didn't happen, I started the engine ( ran normally)and waitng for fuel to come out the vent screw. During a 3 minute observation with engine running, there were a few bubles and a few drops of fuel coming of the vent screw, but no hissing or squirting. I tightened the vent screw and the engine ran fine at the dock for another 10 minutes. So is everything fine? If I had any air still in the line, would I know this right away with rough running or non-running engine? Scott

Check oil level

Scott I have the service manual on the boat so can't be sure but I thought the oil capacity is 2.7 liters. I know that it was less than 1 gallon as I had some left in the (1 gallon) container after refilling the crankcase. You'd know pretty quickly if you still had air in the fuel line. Don

Don, I'll check the manual again

and use my reading glasses ( I'm a 45 year old in denial), but the oil level is full on the dip stick. Thanks. Scott

Six liters sounds right.

My old 2QM20 has a capacity of 5.1 so a 4JHE should be at least 7. You need to be sure obviously so if the manual is not handy then give Torresen a call. The Related Link is one reference but who can you trust? My pump(Tempo Oil Boy), once it gets started, just keeps drawing and I get over 5 quarts through the dipstick. I probably don't make ten strokes to empty the oil pan. Make sure the oil is very warm, open something on top like the oil filler cap to allow air to get in, and do not let the tube bottom out. My tube has a small wire inside that sticks out very slightly to prevent that.

Somebody's spoofing!

I had the same questions with a 3JH2E. Notice that on the attached chart on the previous response, the 3JH and 4JH take 8 qts. or 8 ltrs. Something wrong here? I called Torresson and Yanmar and they both confirmed 8 quarts. Strange, but after 3 oil changes, the most I ever got out was just under 4 quarts and then added just under 4 quarts. And this time I used an electric pump commercial oil changer from the shop where I work and the numbers were exactly the same - just under 4 quarts. And this includes the new filter. I guess the experts never really changed the oil or is the dipstick not marked correctly? If it is the wrong dipstick, then we all have been shorting our engines by 4 quarts. That could be a problem but how do we find out?

So John,

your post suggests that after removing four quarts the dipstick shows empty? That really does confuse the issue. I do know that until I gained some experience it was very difficult to pull over 5 quarts out of my 2QM20. Eight liters is close enough to eight quarts for govt. work I guess.

dip sticks dont show empty!

Dip sticks show full or low. or way to low if nothing is on the stick but there is still some oil in there. My factory repair manual for the 4jhe says 3.0 liters. It is difficult to get all the oil out and nearly impossibe if the engine is cold. should be warmed up. that sure does not sound right though. 3.o isnt much for the 4 banger.

Oil issues

Hey everyone, On a regular oil and filter change of a 4jh you should be able to suck out about 4 qts of WARM oil. I start the refil with 4 qts and a dry filter. Sometimes I have to add oil after running and acheiving oil pressure. NO you pump will not get all the oil out of the engine, you have to resign yourself to this. It's a hard pill to swallow. It's full when there is oil pressure AND the dipstick reads between full and a qt low. Pat McCartin

So about the fuel filters

I replaced mine since this was the first year I had the boat. Yanmar says every 300 hours. What do the rest of you do?

Every Year

I replace lube oil and its filter every year even though the engine never gets near 300 hours. I use a special drain fitting attached to a neoprene hose to drain the lube oil. See http://www.sailetc.com/samstips.htm#Engines:. I change fuel oil filters after each change of lube oil. I also have the boat hauled every year because of the steel keel.

filter changes

I'll throw in my 2 cents here...I'd recomend changing the oil and fuel filters every year, preferably before winter. I'm not hip to having old oil sit in the engine with contaminates all off season. Pat McCartin
