My wife and I bought a 43ft. Morgan six month ago and we are planning our first trip to the Bahamasa this summer. The two months we are able to go is June or July. What is the best time of year to make the trip?

Hurricane Season

July more than June is in the midst of Hurricane season. Winter time is not good either as repetitive cold fronts makes the Gulf Stream passages quite uncomfortable. We like to go between April, May and early June.

Thank You

Thank You, It looks like we will leave early June. The plan is to cross from Fort Pierce to the Bahamas.

Bahamas in June through 4th of July Race week.

I have made 14 trips to the Bahamas in June and July. Race week in the Abacos is a great time to be there. I have a web site for first time cruisers planning the trip.

From Marathon to Gun Cay

I made the crossing from marathon to gun cay this last november. It is NOT the ideal time to do the crossing. I went with three other buddies on a 37' Irwin. It was a great time but on the crossin there were 8 ft waves for 7 to 8 hours of the crossing. It was a fun and adventurous crossing but some folks would not have enjoyed it.

dont forget to account for the current

Lots of first timers miss the bahamas when they cross. its easy all you have to do is not plan for the current going north. gps is good but dont count on electronics to do the job. plot your positions as you cross. so you know where you are if the power goes out. It is way better to leave at night and get there in the daytime. The marks in the bahamas are all but gone. if you go in north of west end, thur indian key the marks are almost all gone. a good plotter will make it a lot safer as untill you get used to the water color you will have a hard time figuring out what is shallow and whats just clear.

Oh and if the wind is out of the north

Wait till is out of the south. I crossed in marathon to west end last month and the wind from the north against the current piled it up to about 12 feet with square waves. Really nasty. 2 days later it was 1 to 3.
