I am looking for an off shore sail boat and the First 38 is recommended in John Kretschmer's book "Used Boat Notebook". According to his review the original First 38 was built from 1982-85. In 1986 it morphed into a 40.5' boat.
Under boat info on this web site is the original considered a "38"?
Under boat info on this web site is the newer model called a "405"?
Is the newer longer boat considered as blue water capable as the original First 38?

Thanks
Doug

I have the brochure + specifications of that model saved in my computer but they are pdf files and haven't found a way to upload them (if you send me your email then I could forward them to you). Alternatively you can log into Beneteau official site (the French one) and find them from "previous models" option. But anyhow, specifications are:
Overall length: 12.25m
Hull length: 11.75m
Waterline: 10.32m
Beam: 3.90m
Displacement: 7.100kg
Ballast: 3.000kg

I am not familiar with feet but 12.25 meters I think is equivalent to 40.2 feet. So, no it's not a 38 footer. But don't ask me why was called First38!!

Oft times the small boats get bigger because they added a swim platform, and not even increasing the living space. Is that the 40's difference? My B323 is 32'10, and am not sure why they did not call it a 33? Maybe to not confuse it with the 331? Go figure

Early models First 38..

I have an '83 first 38, and asked about the "seaworthiness" several years ago when I bought her.

The original First 38, built in 83-84 was built for the Mooring in France. 3 cabins , 2 heads etc. The French built boats have quite high standards and appear stricter than the later US built models. I believe this models are beefer than the later 86+ models as it was the first year to convert to a performance model. These are the years in Beneteau history they were developing the "flag ship line for the sailing market and moving into quaity sailing performance. This difference between Fr. and US construction is debatable and I have not sailed the later, US built 38.

I have been well pleased but have not tested her completely. Although it can through Katria OK. There was an early B38 that was built in ~79 - 80 that is down the dock from me that is not called a First. It has very similar lines but the stern in not as wide and no step down transom, but you can see it evolved into the FIRST 38.

The '83 length is 38.5" measured, whereas the later models indicate they are longer 40.5 although they are called a 38. I have the more details if interested,
