I'm thinking about a trip to the Bellport area in Long Island's Great South Bay. Anyone have experience to share with the Fire Island Inlet? Or any other suggestions for this trip? Places to stay Boat is a 36' Pearson, 30 HP, 4'2" draft.

Come throuh at high slack

water, follow the excellent buoyage and you'll be fine. The dredged channels are deep but shoal out fast at the edges. The prevailing winds are are S to SW, 5-15 kts, less boisterous in the evening. Sayville is worth a visit as is Patchogue. Folks often anchor for the night in the Connetquot River where there are some waterside bar/restaurants you can dock at or dinghy to. You can anchor pretty much anywhere out of the channels and the fish trap areas (of which there are many, check your chart). Marinas are not cheap!

Hey Blue Eyes,

Is that a 36 tri cabin? If so great boat, you can anchor at Sailors Haven by fire Island or Watch Hill Marina east of that and when you get near Bellport watch out by Howells Point it can get shallow there but for the rest of the bay plenty of deep water. When are ya coming?

Thanks for the adviceChris & RAD

I'm not sure when I'm going - probably mid to late August. My original idea was to go for the c420 North Americans being held at Bellport YC about 8/14 to 16th (my son's competing). I'll have to look up the slack currents. The boat is a 36-2 - I guess it could be called a tri-cabin.
