The latest Knotline reminded me to ask: are fire extinguishers required to be mounted and if so where have you mounted them or keep them? I think one topside and one in the vcabin makes the most sense (as a minimum) but was wondering what a Coast Guard inspector would say.

Your ideas on where to put the extinguishers are good. I do believe the Coast Guard reguires the extinguishers to be mounted in the holders they come with or they do not pass inspection for the required number of extinguishers a particular size boat requires. Ken

is my question. Mine, 2 on H356, are still in their boxes in the main cabin. At the cockpit there are only a couple of posibilities, in port lockers. In the cabin I was looking at a location under the chart table or on the sidewall at the companionway. Still trying to decide.

Think where you would want them in case of fire...
While I have a 410 not a 356, I think the thought process about the locations should be similar. I have one inside the door to the forward cabin - if you are sleeping up there and a fire breaks out further aft, you want the extinguisher at hand. Likewise, I have one inside the aft cabin. Finally, I have a third just inside the companionway entrance - it can be easily be reached from the cockpit or from the galley and thus is handy both for outside fires or for engine or galley fires. Don't be cheap about the saftey of you and your guests. Get enough to have one in each likely place you would want one, and HANG THEM UP NOW!

Mounting not Required, But do it Anyway
A mounting bracket is required for a fire extinguisher to be certified by the Coast Guard. It does count if it is out of the box in the bracket and not mounted. I know, it makes no sense to me either. They suggest very strongly that they be mounted and accessible, the biggest reason is so they will always be in the exact same place if you ever need one. There are guidelines for how many are required. Generally up to 26' one is required to 40' two and to 65' three. I like to have one for each sleeping area and one for the galley. If any of these are not be easily accessible from the cockpit or the engine compartment then add additional bottles. An anchor is not required either go figure that one out.

Mine are...
On my 356, I have one mounted just inside the companion way, one in the aft cabin opposite the stove, and one in the forward V-berth. The boat also has the engine system. Those seemed to be the logical spots for easy access and along routes of escape. Steve

On my 356 I currently have three mounted. One in the aft cabin high on the angled wall as you enter the galley, one under the nav station and one in the forward cabin over the port locker. One in the cockpit makes sense, I would probably mount it to the pedestal or on the guard. I also have thought about adding a fire supression system in the engine box. I'll be looking at them at the Norwalk, Ct show.

State Regulations
Each state makes its own regulations in this area. Your state should provide a booklet with its boating regulations. Connecticut requires that one fire extinguisher be mounted in the cockpit, and a second be mounted in the cabin. CG wants mounted
Several CG courtesy checks ago it was noted that the fire ext. needed to be permanantly mounted to pass. This merely meant a few screws to attachthe holders in the aft lazerete. This was about 2001.

It was a requirement that they be mounted untill the CME (Courtesy Marine Examination) program became the VSC (Vessel Safety Check) program. Now the Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron or a state entity (Fish and Wildlife, Marine Patrol, Sherriffs Office, etc) all do inspections using the same form and giving the same inspection and same sticker. It was a big fight over the fire extingishers being mounted. It is still suggested and should be mentioned during every inspection.
