I'm replacing me old tiller with an IdaSailor tiller. I'm searching for personal experiences regarding: What preparation was done (sealers, primers, etc.) before the final finish was applied? What final finish is the most durable?

Experiment

I've tried about everything. All finishes fail when exposed to the Sun. I highly recommend a tiller cover, worth any amount. I am currently experimenting with my teak. I sanded, bleached with Parks Wood bleach and dried thoroughly. I then coated the teak with two part flowable epoxy. It took two coats as the first coat soaked in and was a little rough. I then finished it with classic Cetol. Cetol is likely the best finish with a high concentration of iron to absorb UV. UV is the enemy here. Steve P.

Sanding, and LOTS of coats

I did mine last winter. Bought the IdaSailor model. It is BEAUTIFUL. All I did was sand it lightly with very fine grit paper and finish with Healmsman varnish, sanding between each coat. I probably did 8-10 coats, which may have been more than needed, but it looks GREAT. I did also invest in a canvas cover for it to keep it out of the sun.
