Went for our first sail of the season over the weekend and found 6 holes chewed in our mainsail. Grrr

Where did you store the sail?
We left it on the boom. When we put her away for the season I looked around and saw lots of other boats in our dry lot with sails still on, so I thought that would be okay. I didn't even think about mice as a possibility. Expensive lesson learned. Next year I'll be bringing them home.

I bet it could be mice or squirrels. Before covering the mainsail again, add a few mothballs. It works. Do that for three months as you train them critters to stay away

I can imagine your disappointment. I stored sails in my barn once and learned that lesson.
On the bright side, they are easily repaired. Get some sail repair tape wide enough to cover the holes. Put a patch on each side and stitch around the edges. You can use the sail for quite a while without stitches if necessary.

Irish Spring soap can also be used to keep the mice away. Sorry to hear, a mouse got my inflatable once and another one chewed some wires in my outboard.

We had mice at home too!
I used to hang cushions on plywood sheets suspended from the rafters in the attic. I'm sure the mice got a good laugh about that.
I think getting as much salt out as possible would help.
