I am starting to get serious about getting a trailer for my Hunter 25.5, and the more I look the more I realize how difficult it is to find a used trailer that fits my boat. Most of the trailer dealers in my locale area cater to power boats. And some will gladly build me a new trailer for $4000! But that a little to pricey for me. Maybe I am going about looking the wrong way. Do you'all have any suggestions? Good websites, used trailer dealers... I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, but I am willing to travel to get what I want. Thanks for all your help.

Convert A Power Boat Trailor
Tony, consider having a good trailor building/welding shop fabricate bunks for your boat from a good, used power boat trailor. Preferably someone who understands the needs of sailboats. If you make the bunk stands adjustable you can fine tune them for your keel and hull shape. I should think a double axle with electric brakes and rated for about 7K lbs should be about right. I use 14' - 2x10'x2" hemlock as my bunk boards and these are screwed to 2 jack stands per side, welded to the frame. Don

A Possible Source
When I was stationed at Langley there was a trailer place in Newport News that did some excellent work. Not sure of the name but it was off of 664 between 64 and the Monitor Merimac (Virginia) tunnel seems like just a couple of exits up from 64. If you are planning on using the trailer to launch the boat you may want to talk to the experts about electric brakes I cannot think of any boat trailer I have ever seen using them. It does not seem like they would hold up well especially if you stick it in something other than fresh water.

Built mine in 2 weekends
Yes they do want a few too many bucks for a trailer. I needed one for a Cat 30. Quotes from $7800 to $11K. My wife wanted to do a "BOBBIT" on me! After buying the boat I told her I could get a trailer for around 3 to 4 thousand. Ha... honey put the knife away! I saw a 30 on a trailer and got the measurements. Next I found a mobile home dealer and purchased 3 axles with all new tires for $675. I know you can't use them on anything but a mobile home. What do you think my Cat 30 is? I went to a metal scrap yard and found most of the steel an pipes for the trailer. I had to purchase the main channel. To make the story short, me and one other guy completed the trailer in 2 weekends. Total cost $2700. Thats lights, paint, keel guides, everything. I also got 6 extra tires and wheels for spares. Maiden voyage was from Utah to San Diego. No problems. Pulled boat back, no problems. Hey if I can do it you sure should! Good luck, the idea of using a converted power boat trailer is great! you can find them cheap.

Tom, They do cut wood that size...14' 2"x12" x2". I just had some trees sawed into lumber and the man cut 10 that size in case I needed them. :+] We had to use a lift to stack them to dry. I sure hope they dry out and loose some weight. I do need a trailer. Maybe I can use them. Happy Holidays mayona
