So this seems like it might be helpful to a lot of the owners of smaller Hunter sailboats and I wanted to share. My boat came with a pesky leak. I would get water coming down from inside the head liner and then making its way down the side of the bulkhead next to the head... and also leak down the carpet that lines the walls of the cabin. I went through all of the deck hardware and re-bedded it all. No Joy! I re-bedded the wooden cross beams of the sliding companionway .... still no joy. I bought a companionway cover (partial joy) but still got a small leak after very heavy rains. I even got some rubberized paint and repainted the top of the cabin (no additional joy).
About a month ago, I added an additional set of rope clutches and an additional deck organizer to the port side of my boat. While I had all of my tools on the boat, I also replaced the little rubber bumpers (washer?) that sit under the cockpit locker.... you know the ones that keep the lid from slamming onto hard plastic.
The pack of rubber washers I ordered came with a few extra so I decided to take the time and replace the rubber bumpers that exist in the companionway hatch. While I was at it, I noticed that the screw that held the rubber bumper in place had made a mess of the screw's hole so I put a dab of 4200 in the hole before I put the new bumper in place....
JOY!!!
After a month my boat is still bone dry. So I'm thinking that the bumper created a small damn and pooled a little water in the track of the sliding companionway and that water eventually found it's way into the screw hole and into the head liner.... then traveled ...
Anyway. If you have a small leak you can't find this might be a place to look.
Hope this helps someone else.
