I have friends who are always downloading music from the net. This music is actually on other people computers and is acheived via file sharing software. Do any of these programs work with electronic charts in .BSB format.

I wouldn't be surprised but

I think it is a whole different group of people who need electronic charts and they have the money to buy them. Besides there are only so many charts one might need. For example you can buy electronic charts for about $10 each and you may never need more than 30-50 charts. At $15 per CD and literally millions of different CDs out there it can get very expensive very quickly. I also think that most of the people who use electonic charts are more likely to honor the copyright laws. The info is public domain but you need to pay someone to convert it to an electronic format. My advice is buy the charts you need. Getting them through a file sharing source is no different than shoplifting. Tim

Illegal

Yeah - I'm neurotic but . . . File sharing of charts would be illegal. Can't have how-to's on the subject I'm afraid. Flame suit on. Justin - O'day OWners' Web

Try NOAA

NOAA is publishing electronic charts in the public domain (Link). Problem might be getting decent software to read/use them in their format -- at least for now. I think the market will eventually respond and shift the traditional market leaders (e.g., MapTech, The Cap'n, DeLorme, etc) out of the proprietary format chart/map business (with nav software as a sideline) and more into the nav software business. --RonD
