Does anyone have experience fiberglassing over the exterior of the aluminum holding tank? The aluminum is generally sound.

Very bad idea...don't do it

The aluminum won't remain sound...as it corrodes and crumbles, it won't just dissolve, but turn into chunks of corroded metal that can clog the discharge and screw up a macerator. If it's sound now, leave it alone (if it ain't broke yet, don't fix it)...just keep an eye on it for signs that it's starting to leak at weld...and you see the first one, replace it with a plastic tank.

Rick, 37-cutter?

Where do you have an aluminum holding tank on a 37-cutter that you could fiberglass? I thought the only aluminum holding tank was the one that they put under the shower seat. How would you glass over it? Regardless I think Peggy is right. It will deteriorate and you won't know it until things clog up. Now if you could cut off the top and glass the inside you could save it. My own H37C under shower seat tank was gone when I bought the boat. Cut out and thrown away.

holding tank

My (new poly) holding tank is under the V-berth. The old aluminum one under the shower seat is now a dry storage area with an opening hatch on the shower seat for access. I did epoxy the inside, but only for cosmetic/sanitation reasons. I also re-did my water tanks (see photo forum archives). These 20 year-old aluminum tanks are all probably near the end of thei lifespan.
