what does everyone do with their fenders while out sailing? Do you keep them on deck? In lockers? Leave them at the dock? What is the best method for dealing with these big items? maybe our next quiz? dave

Flip them over the lifelines.

David: When we go for a day sail we just usually flip them up over the lifelines. If we are going to make a trip we usually stow them in away. This way the decks are clear. Of course in MDR they just leave them hangin' out. That is why we call them Marina Del Rey Racing Stripes (let's hear it from the MDR crowd). That's probably only the stink pots that do that!

While out for the day, we stow 'em in the V. If we are just motoring around the corner to another marina, then we flip 'em over the lifelines, leaving them on deck.

A nifty trick

is to cover them with crumbled Aluminum Foil and use as radar reflector in emergency situations. However We store in aft laz as well. Having them hang on lifelines, one risks losing them in rough seas.

fenders while underway

I like the idea of wrapping the foil (perhaps when offshore). On daysails they stay on deck ready for deployment. On longer sails they are hung over the rail on the transom. If I need them they are right behind me and easily accessible to be used.

Fender storage.

We have the s/s wire fender carriers mounted on both sides of the stern railings. Each carries two 10" fenders. While motoring the ten minutes out the river we stow them. Convenience depends upon how they are connected. We use the simple bronze snap hooks. And I keep them snapped on the rails while stowed AND while moving them. You can see them in the photos on "The Boats" under H37C, Schenck on 9/22/2000.

Out of Sight!

Out of sight! I have a particular thing about folks that leave their fenders hanging all day long like tires on a tug boat. I don't know, perhaps it was something that happened when I was young. I store my fenders in the stbd. cockpit locker (lazarette) of my O'Day 22 centerboard. They lie against the hull vertically, with lines already attached for quick use. Sometimes, after I rummage through the other things in the lazarrete (aux. fuel, anchor, gaff pole, docking lines, etc.)the fenders tend to get tossed about. But all I do is grab one of the lines attached to them, and pull! Let's hope for a nice Spring. It's raining all the time out here. Stt Timm "Karakahl"

Leave 'em on the dock

Unless I know I'm going to be tying up somewhere (pump the holding tank, eat at a restaurant, etc), I leave 'em at the dock. I also have to smaller spares in the lazerette just in case of an emergency situation but this has worked fine for me. Besides, the bottoms get all slimy & yucky and I'll be jiggered if I'm gonna clean that crap off every time I go out! :) LaDonna

David; For daysails I leave them on deck, still tied to the stanchion base, ready to be kicked over upon return to the marina, but on trips to the island, I store in a deck locker. Whatever you do, don't leave them hanging, EVER! You'll look like a stinkpotter in a Bayliner and other sailors will not return your greetings. Larry

Fenders come aboard

The fenders come aboard as soon as practically possible after we leave the dock. They go into the cockpit locker. Even when daysailing there's always a chance that we may have to raft up with another boat, tie up somewhere else or have to deal with a bad crosswind at the dock when we get back. If you ever have to slip your anchor line in a hurry, a fender tied to the end of the rode makes it easy to come back later and retrieve your ground tackle. Peter Hunter 23 "Raven"

swim ladder

On our H26, we have them hanging from the top rail of the swim ladder and snugged below with a shock cord. A fairly easy arrangement, and yes we take them off when we lower the ladder for our once a year swim.

Lasarette hanger

I have a 1X2 with nails driven into it attached in the deck locker (lazarette) so that I can hang them up and still reach them. Like a little coat rack. Herb

foil-wrapped fenders

I like the idea of wrapping the fenders in foil too, but aren't they a little large to cook on the propane grill? What do you serve with grilled fenders (besides suds)? Tom
