Have any of you heard of or own a Farymann Diesel, 4.3 kw, generator. It seems to be a very simple gen, which I consider a positive (kiss), and comparatively priced to the Northern Lights genset. It's raw water cooled, which is appealing to me (less moving parts, one water pump, etc). The link below is all the info I can find, other than an email I sent to Central Marine Diesel, who assured me it comes with everything necessary to install in my boat. Anyway, any opinions would be appreciated.

In this day and age i would want and FWC unit, a significant cost in other gen sets is the sound proof enclosure which seems to be lacking ?

I would also want to see it run as every single cylinder diesel i have seen has been rather unpleasant in its vibration level :)

Wow - I didn't know they still MADE Farymanns! It might be a chore finding parts. But they're the epitome of "old-school" diesels: mechanical fuel pump, no glow-plugs, direct injection, long stroke, low RPM. Which means they last forever and run in just about anything (ie as long as you can crank them you don't need a battery, and they'll run underwater as long as they get air). Bad News is they're very heavy, loud, and tend to vibrate.

Oh, and I guess the "running underwater" thing doesn't work so well on a genset...

I'd think the major issues are the vibration and lack of parts.

Check out Entec West, Inc who markets their 3500 model (35 amp) genset using the single cyclinder Farymann. The engine and stator are sea water cooled via a heat exchanger. Electric seawater pump outside the engine compartment has no impeller to maintain. Uses electic circuitry through switches to monitor low oil pressure, high head temp and water temps to ensure all works as designed or it shuts down. Fool proof system and it's not that noisy and doesn't shake at all.

Hey druit,
That sounds like my Yanmar YSM12 that powers my CAL2-25. Just like the rabbit on TV, she just keeps going and going and going ...................................................
