We are heading North from Newburyport to Casco Bay. We have done Richmond, Biddeford pool, and Peaks Island. Does anyone have a favorite place to anchor north of here? Once we arrive in the Portland area we will have 2 or 3 days to explore before heading back to Newburyport.

Anchorages

The Basin is one of my favorites. From the Richmond Island area head for White Bull then towards the New Meadows river. Also, there is a beautiful cove at Snow Island. Both of these are on the East side of Casco Bay.

Jewel Island

The Basin, Gosslings, Cohaug Bay. Biggest problem,- you may never leave Gods country. Take an extra week and sail "down east". This might be the most beautiful cruising grounds in the world. Booth Bay Harbor, Penobscott Bay, Blue Hill Bay, Frenchman Bay, Sommes Sound, Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island.

Maine Anchorages

My votes include some of the ones mentioned - I'd say Jewell Isalnd is my favorite, as much for the hike around the island (spectacular) as for the anchorage (also spectacular). Note though the Jewell can get exposed especially if the wind is from the SW as at high tide the swells can cross the water that creates the anchorage. You will want to keep in mind that about 15 minutes NE is the northern side of cliff island. A great harbor in any southerlies. Watch the ridge of rock running out into the middle and the rock on the north side. The Goslings or Maquoit are also excellent places to be. If you need to provision consider a night in the Haraseket River at south freeport. None of the outlet bustle but you have access. I have a soft spot for Sebasco Harbor - On the west side of cape small this is a good harbor with a decent restaurant and not too much traffic. People to say hi to but not to trip over. Definitely get a copy of the Taft Crusing guide before coming up. West Marine can order it for you or local shops may offer it. I believe it is private published so it can be hard to get. The taft has lots of local color and really gets into the flavor of the environment. The mapquest guide is a list of gas stations. Handy but not as nice. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
