Faster on one tack than the other

Anyone find that their 336 is faster on one tack than the other? A few people have commented on this. If so is there a cure?

Sails set differently?

I don't know about faster, but I have noticed/suspected that the sails set differently on different tacks. I suppose that would have the ultimate effect of changing the boat speed. I always figured it was my imagination, or an optical effect.Last summer someone wrote an article at sailnet.com about this phenomenon, trying to explain it with fluid dynamics and air density. After reading the article and applying my 1 year of college physics, I decided that I wasn't quite ready to buy it. I'm sure the article is still there.

GPS Speed or Knot meter?

My knot meter reads differently on one tack than the other on my 320, but the GPS SOG is about the same. Sometimes the difference can be over 2 knts depending upon heel. I think it is because the knot meter is mounted off centerline.Steve

Another factor can be when the waves do not follow the wind direction. In this condition the boat is meeting the waves differently on the two tacks. This happens often on the ocean close to the coast.

I have noticed that on my 29.5 too. I know that if the speed transducer is not on the center line of the boat you will get a difference of indicated speed on opposite tacks. Also, if the standing rigging is not tuned correctly and the mast is leaning to port or starboard, you will be faster or slower on opposite tacks. I think checking it with a gps will show what, if any, speed differences there are on opposite tacks.

Check the position of the genoa sheet tracks. On my 310 the stupid factory have placed the moulding for the starboard one 4" further back than the port one!!!!!! If, like me you count the holes to position the genoa, there is a 50% chance you are wrong. this makes a hell of a difference to slot size and therefore speed.I haven't complained because it cant be fixed without a new cabin top!
