I have a 1974 Faryman Diesel on a boat I just purchased the previous owner had the engine rebuilt in 2003 and only has about 45 hours on the rebuild. He indicated just recently he had been having trouble with initial start and now I am having to open the hatch to the engine compartment and spray ether direct in order to fire the engine. Once it has run for a while it will restart but still a little slow. I new to the boat and definently don't know anything about diesel engines, what should I look for other than a good diesel mechanic.

Don't use ether or starting fluid

I have read a number of articles that say to not use ether or starting fluids with diesels. Do some research and/or get a mechanic to show you how to manage your engine. Diesels are pretty user friendly once you get the hang of it. Get a mechanic who will let you watch and who will teach you -- or take a class. Fair sailing Bill Murray

Boom..I blew the head off!

Starting fluid and ether will blow apart your diesel engine in a flash. Have a mechanic check it...perhaps you have a bad glow plug or a clogged fuel filter.

Farymann" boom"

Thanks for the advise on using ether on the diesel I have a mechanic scheduled for Friday. Not knowing the engine I was a little afraid to do as recomended by the previous owner certainly don't want to blow myself up.
