I have a Hunter 40.5 (1995) whose aft berth cushions need to be replaced. They are 4" thick. Might someone first of all know what density these original factory cushions might be (I see foam at uphotstry shops with rating like 40, 60, 70 with the higher number being harder. Some of the samples say HC 60 and other LC or LO (I couldn't tell) on them. What might that factor be. Appreciate any advice. tom

Need different foam for sitting vs sleeping.

You may want to contact someone that sells this stuff (like US Yacht Cushions). You need different foam for different applications. The best foam for a bed is Latex or a Memory Foam. This stuff lasts for years and Latex is mold and mildew resistant. It is not cheap, but worth the extra cost.

Industrial Supplier

I used a local company that converts bulk foam material (called buns)into various thicknesses and shapes for all kinds of industries. Check your local yellow pages for foam converters. I took the Upholstery off and left them with the settee and mattress cushions. They copied them and cut them from the foam I selected in their inventory. The company I used made ours slightly thicker to accomodate the stretched Upholstery. We spent around $300. Jeff

I Got it Wrong

I went to a local upholstery supplier and enquired about foam. He recommended the stuff he normally uses. Boy were those beds hard. Fortunately I discovered that the aft cabin moulding on my 1996 H376 is identical to the current model and ordered a sprung mattress from Hunter. Heavy, expensive - but sooo comfortable. Sweet dreams!

Dashew Formula

The Dashews recommend a sandwhich of differing densities. Here is an exerpt: We had him make our new mattress from the following materials: on the bottom there is three inches (75mm) of 2831 material (2.8 pound density - #31 firmness). Then comes two and a half inches (62mm) of visco elastic 3821. This is a material which takes a set, and slowly recovers - so it conforms to your body. The 3.8 pound density is very high, which means really long life. A final layer, half inch thick, of the 2831 is on the top. I have also provided a link to the article.
